Take Advantage of Your Competition’s Weakness

By August 30, 2016 No Comments

You’ll find 1,001 reasons to have a comprehensive SEO strategy if you do a little bit of research on the topic. One of our favorites is “taking advantage of your competition’s weakness”! What does this mean? Well…if you’re lucky enough to be in an industry that is still “SEO immature”, then you have a real opportunity to stand out in the crowd! Your competition hasn’t taken advantage of search engine marketing, so now you can jump ahead of the crowd with some well-placed changes/additions to your site.

It sounds a little negative to say “take advantage”, but this is business and you need all of the competitive advantages you can find. The key here is to remember what Google and the other search engines are looking for. You want a company that’s going to help you increase your content with information that users will want to read and share with their friends. The old days of keyword stuffing are over. Google is smarter than ever and you have to keep up with its constant changes. Check out our previous blog about why content is king!

In 2012, Smashing Magazine included an article that hit the nail on the head in our opinion. It stated, “We should be optimizing for people. After all, that is what Google is trying to do.” It’s a great article that many SEO companies will not appreciate. At least not “old school” SEO companies. Today’s SEO consultants have to think like a consumer and hope to align their desires with Google’s algorithms and their website’s content. Tough stuff for sure! But if it were easy, everybody would do it!

So…the question now becomes, “is SEO still relevant”? Of course it is. We just need to redefine what SEO means. It doesn’t mean trying to trick the search engines into finding your site first. It’s showing Google and friends that your site is valuable. It’s a site (or more importantly, a page) that is worthy of exalted placement on the respective search. So, the bottom line? You need every advantage possible when you’re in business. Take advantage of your competition if they’re napping on the job when it comes to SEO. You may be able to jump the head of the line without them even knowing it!
